TUNGSTEN

It is a hard and heavy transition metal   white to steel-grey in colour, known for its good rheological properties. It is found in many ores, including wolframite   and scheelite .

In 1961, IUPAC   declared both names to be eligible (wolframite is preferred for compounds).

In its pure form, it is widely used in electrical applications and its compounds are put to extensive use in industry. The most notable example of its use is the production of the filaments of incandescent lamps   (this is because it is the metal with the highest melting point), but its alloys   are also used in the aerospace industry.

Pure tungsten has a colour ranging from steel grey to white, and is very hard. It can be cut with a hacksaw when it is very pure, and if it is impure it is very fragile and difficult to work; tungsten is obtained through sintering   because its melting temperature is too high to permit casting. It is then processed by means of forging , traction   or extrusion . Tungsten has a wide range of uses, the most common of which is without doubt as tungsten carbide   (W 2 C , WC) in cemented carbides  . These materials are highly resistant to wear and are used in the processing of other metals, in the mining , oil   and construction industries. Tungsten is also used for the filaments of incandescent bulbs   and vacuum tubes , and for various types of electrodes , because it can be made into extremely thin filaments with a high melting point. Tungsten carbide has recently also been used for jewellery due to its scratch and wear resistance properties.

Other uses:

  • Its properties of density and hardness make it ideal for heavy alloys   used in armaments, heat sinks, and balancing and counter-balancing systems.
  • It is ideal for darts , and accounts for 80% of their weight.
  • High-speed steels   are often tungsten alloys; they can contain up to 18% tungsten.
  • Superalloys   containing this metal are used for turbine blades, steel tools and mechanical parts or wear resistant coatings.
  • Composite tungsten materials are used in the place of lead   for some types of ammunition   for firearms .
  • The chemical compounds of tungsten are used in catalysts , inorganic pigments and high temperature lubricants   (tungsten disulphide), stable up to 500 °C .
  • Since the coefficient of thermal expansion   of tungsten is very close to that of glass   and boron   silicate, tungsten is used for watertight glass-metal joints.
  • It is used for kinetic energy penetrators   as an alternative to depleted uranium .
  • È It is used in solder alloy with thorium   for electrodes that do not melt at the temperature of the electric arc .
  • It is used as the contact material with plasma   in nuclear fusion plants.
  • Due to its high radiation protection capacity (10 times higher than that of lead), it is used in applications requiring good absorption capacity at a reduced size. It is also easier to work than lead and is less polluting and more resistant (characteristics that make it possible to use underwater).
  • In the form of sodium polytungstate, it is used as a heavy liquid to evaluate the density of the materials, in particular for gemological evaluations.
  • It is used for surgical bone and dental drills, in the form of tungsten carbide .
  • It is widely used for chip removal tools in the form of sintered tungsten carbide   also known as cemented carbide .
  • It is used for the production of X-rays with the X-ray tube . Research is currently underway in the possibility of using tungsten instead of lead   to make radiation protection bodies for use in radiology .
  • It is used in the form of high density tungsten paste in recreational fishing for balancing fishing baits and terminals, and makes the fishing line sink if passed through this paste during spooling.

Our products are mainly for the oil, construction and lighting industry.
